Kunkel and Terrick score university awards!

At today's university awards and retirement reception, two faculty members were recognized for their work.

Assistant Professor Marianne Kunkel was one of two university faculty presented with the James Mehl Faculty Scholarship Award.

Advanced Instructor Dawn Terrick was one of three university faculty presented with the university Excellence in Teaching Award.

REACH for the stars!

The MWSU journal of literature and contemporary art has a new name, and under that name it was launched this week. REACH, formerly CANVAS, will continue to serve MWSU undergraduates and alumni.

Students and faculty gathered to celebrate the launch and award winners from this year's edition. Editor-in-Chief Huey and his staff--JulieAnne Barber, Caitlin Dillon,  and Lora Kroush (rising Editor-in-Chief) ran the event.

Award for best prose piece: Skylar Nichols for "The Aftermath" (Dr. Bill Church served as prose judge)

Award for best poem: Shaya Force for "Seven" (Dr. Gaywyn Moore served as poetry judge)

Terrick presents paper

On April 11, Dawn Terrick presented, "Discovering the Student, Discovering the Self: Teaching Developmental Writing Students to Find and Refine their Personal and Academic Voices" at the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) Conference in Ashland, NE.

2019 ENG 100 Essay Reading and Reception

The 13th annual reception to celebrate the ENG 100 student publication, Discovering the Student, Discovering the Self, was hosted by Dawn Terrick, Director of Developmental Writing, and held on Wednesday, April 17.  Approximately 85 people attended, including students and their families, faculty, administration and staff. 

 

President Vartabedian kicked off the reception, then Dawn Terrick awarded students with certificates and copies of the book, and the students themselves concluded the afternoon by reading excerpts from their essays. 

 

Students read about truly personal experiences, with courage and grace.  The newly published authors were able to keep the audience enthralled.  This truly was an afternoon of celebration.

Naftal and Lund Defend Theses

Two students in the Master of Applied Arts in Written Communication program successfully defended their final projects this week.

Christina Lund submitted a thesis on the connections between politeness theory and technical communication,
using an autoethnographic model to study her experiences as a new employee at a large organization.  Dr. Kaye Adkins chaired her committee and her other members included Dr. Janice Cools-Stephens and Dr. Mei Zhang of the Department of Communication and Journalism. 

 

Ms. Lund also received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the department this year. 

Naftal Naftal submitted a capstone on community engagement and the technical communicator's value in organizations.  His work included instructional documents created for clients, research, and a grant proposal concerning his home country, Mozambique.  Dr. Michael Charlton chaired his committee and his other members included Dr. Kaye Adkins and Dr. Cynthia Jeney.

Grant Writing Workshop

On Saturday, April 6, Dr. Michael Charlton and Dr. Susan Martens conducted a grant writing workshop for area teachers. Thanks to Prairie Lands Writing Project and the MWSU graduate school for their support.
