Prairie Lands has Busy December


Prairie Lands Writing Project December Activities

Terri McAvoy (St. Joseph, retired)  presented two-days of model lessons at Pickett Elementary School in St. Joseph on Dec. 5th and 6th h as part of PLWP’s SEED 2 Professional Development in a High-Need Elementary School Grant.

As part of our work with the i3 College Ready Writers Program, McAvoy (with PLWP Director Susan Martens) also facilitated a debriefing session on Dec. 4 at MWSU with English/Language Arts teachers from Hamilton who observed PLWP Teacher Consultants Josie Clark, Stacia Studer, and Tia Fraham in action in their classrooms at Bode Middle School in St. Joseph.

In more i3 news, Tom Pankiewicz (MWSU), Kathy Miller (Weston), and Valorie Stokes (Platte County) facilitated a professional development in-service on the Six Traits of writing at Braymer High School on Dec. 4 and at Breckenridge on Dec. 6.

Also on Dec. 6, a Mini-Conference was held at Hamilton for K-12 teachers.  PLWP Teacher Consultants Sara Capra (Park Hill), Lynn Tushaus (Savannah, retired), and Michele Irby (Orrick) presented “Mining Mentor Texts: Reading as a Reader/Reading as a Writer” and “Writing to Learn in the Content Areas.”

Finally, on Dec. 9, Pankiewicz led a book study group at Hamilton for teachers reading Get It Done! Writing and Analyzing Informational Texts to Make Things Happen.
